Kids in Tech’s STEM Challenge is entitled Cybersecurity: Keeping Our Networks Safe

Students will learn about the architecture of the Internet , how to stay safe online, and how to be a good digital citizen. By participating in puzzle-solving games, students will explore how individuals can use the internet to obtain information and how they can make sure their personal information is safe. Students will explore topics such as the internet of things, cryptography, career pathways in the field and so much more!

The Challenges

Elementary School

In the STEM Week Challenge for grades K-5, elementary school students will learn about the history of cryptography to create a programmed cipher , what is an IP address and why one’s internet has an address if its own, what it means to be a good digital citizen, and how to stay safe online through engaging games and activities.

Middle School

In This STEM Challenge for grades 6-8, middle school students will learn how encryption and authentication keeps data safe from hackers. They will also learn about the basics of computer networking, including how computers on the Internet are connected and how messages pass from node to node through the global network.

High School

In This STEM Challenge for grades 9-12, students will learn about the similarities and differences between Cryptography, Cryptology, Cryptanalysis, and encryption networks; explore careers in the cybersecurity field , create their own Diffie Hellman key exchange, and explore the fundamentals of modern network design. Through engaging activities, students will develop a firm foundation on these cybersecurity concepts.

There are hundreds of job titles in cybersecurity, but some of the top positions include:

  4. SECURITY ADMINISTRATOR
