LOWELL – This Friday, in recognition of Pi Day (March 14), Kids in Tech will host a special Pizza “Pi” Party for students participating in the after-school tech program. As part of the lesson, students will measure the diameter and circumference of pizzas, and use this hands-on display as a lesson on fractions and ratios.
Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. In 2009, the United States House of Representatives supported the designation of Pi Day.
“By throwing this Pizza ‘Pi’ Party, we’re putting together a creative take on learning some basic math concepts, developed in a way that aligns with the hands-on approach that serves as the foundation for our curriculum,” said Olu Ibrahim, founder of Kids in Tech. “Getting creative is how we reach these students, and a Friday pizza party is certainly more interesting than sitting at desks in a classroom.”
