Are you passionate about STEAM Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics and eager to make a difference in young lives? Kids in Tech is seeking enthusiastic Afterschool Program Instructors to empower underserved youth in Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville.
Our Mission
Kids in Tech is on a mission to bridge the STEM education gap in underserved communities. We're tackling the underrepresentation of Hispanic, Black, and female workers in STEAM fields head-on. By providing engaging, hands-on learning experiences, we're igniting passion for technology and innovation in the next generation.
The Role: Afterschool Program Instructor
As an Instructor, you'll be at the forefront of our Afterschool Tech Club ASTC, working directly with students aged 9-14. You'll guide them through exciting STEAM activities, fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
What You'll Do:
- Lead two cohorts of up to 15 students each, meeting twice weekly for 60-minute sessions over 30 weeks
- Implement our dynamic KiT curriculum, preparing materials for hands-on learning
- Serve as a near-peer mentor, showing students how STEAM connects to everyday life and future careers
- Maintain an encouraging classroom environment where students feel safe to explore and learn
- Engage families through monthly outreach, keeping them involved in their children's STEAM education
- Collaborate with partner sites to align our curriculum with their educational goals
- Organize field trips, job shadow days, and guest speaker sessions for real-world STEAM exposure
- Collect and enter student data to track progress and impact
What We're Looking For:
- High school students/graduates or GED holders, ideally aged 16-24
- Passion for STEAM fields, with related club or coursework experience a plus
- Background in education or youth development preferred
- Enthusiasm, adaptability, and commitment to fostering a growth mindset
- Bilingual candidates are encouraged, especially in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, French, Vietnamese, Arabic, Mandarin, Cape Verdean Creole, or Khmer
- U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
- Greater Boston residents or those with reliable transportation preferred
What We Offer:
- Competitive hourly rate: $17.55 - $28.50, based on experience
- Professional development and networking opportunities in STEM fields
- Flexible schedule aligned with the school calendar
- Potential for special projects and growth opportunities
Time Commitment:
- Program runs October 2024 - June 2025
- Minimum two days per week at partner sites during active program weeks
- Additional time for lesson prep, data management, and team meetings
